Finally I Learned the History of Stoicism
You must know too.
Every time I open YouTube, it’s filled with videos about Stoicism. You’ve probably seen them too — pictures of Roman statues, quotes about staying strong, and promises to change your life. After noticing every second video about it for weeks, I got curious. I wanted to discover the true meaning of Stoicism. I decided to learn about it.
It is a fascinating story that begins with a shipwreck and leads to one of the most influential philosophies of history. I am sharing what I learned about this ancient wisdom that still has its impact on our world today.
The story starts with a merchant whose name was Zeno from Cyprus around 300 BCE.
Once he lost everything in a shipwreck and was stranded thousands of miles from home in Athens. At that point, his life took a major turn. When many of us would give up, Zeno turned this tragedy into an opportunity.
After losing everything, he entered a bookshop where he discovered the philosophy of Socrates. This unexpected meeting sparked a philosophical journey that would shape Zeno’s life and influence generations to come.
Zeno began to study with Athens philosophers and later on, teaching his students, he developed what we now know as Stoicism.
